A Team of One A TEAM OF ONE
Trevor Fitzgerald approached this first event of the 2010 Xtreme One Man Series a bit differently than others in the field of 71 tounament anglers from around the state. Sure, he would be working some of the same areas others had found during practice. And he surely wouldn't be the only one using his PowerPole to stay on those fish when and if they bit. But, come weigh in time, if his fish co-operated, he knew he'd be sharing some information about the day, his baits of choice...and his wife.

The morning started out just like any other morning over the last 3 months. Biting cold, breezy (turning to windy as the sun rose), with water temps on West Lake Toho in the high 40's to low 50's and 71 of the best bass fishermen in the southeast, all hoping to claim the PowerPole sponsored $5,000.00 guaranteed 1st place prize that would be awarded at day's end. Fishermen have had their fill of the "less than ideal" Florida weather of late. They hoped the fish had too!

Working for the Marion County Police Force, Trevor is lucky enough to schedule a little practice time prior to Xtreme events. He found fish wanting to move in for the spawn, but hampered by the above mentioned atypical Florida weather patterns. Even on tournament day, 56 degree water was as good as it got for Trevor. He chose to stay in Toho and start as far upwind as he could. The PowerPole proved once again to be invaluable. The noise of the trolling motor only became necessary when a fish was pinned to cover. The PowerPole would be lifted, the fish retrieved, then back down it went, allowing Trevor (and others, using the same method) to coninue fan casting over the flat. Employing the services of his "Fitzgerald Custom" 7' rod, he worked the area with a 6" Twisted Tube, made by Red October Baits. The Twisted Tube can be worked in the same manner a swim bait is. Trevor chose 50 lb PowerPro braid, a 1/4 ounce Tru Tungsten weight and Gamakatsu's 5/0 EWG to swim the tube over and through the cover, ultimately catching nearly 20 fish over the day. He figured he had about 17 lbs by 8:30 and all of the 24.06 lbs he brought to the scales, by 10:00 am.

That custom rod mentioned earlier? The MHX blank from Mudhole Tackle is the blank of choice by the builder of his Custom Series rods, also known as his wife! Trevor's wife has been building rods and her craftsmanship has caught the eye of some of his fellow competitors. It looks as though she may be busy for a while!

It is worth mentioning that the one thing most important in Trevor's One Man Series opener win, has not yet been credited. It seems he owes his set of jumper cables all the credit since they came to the rescue when he learned that his cranking battery was out of juice! No doubt, future events will have him well stocked with Red October Baits, an array of Fitzgerald Custom rods...and...as always, his jumper cables!

A few others in the money...

Joe Ventrello brought a 5 fish limit for 21.81 lbs to the scales, good for 2nd place! Often times, that's a good enough bag to win. Good going Joe!

Greg Watts of inshore fame, has proven a fish is a fish and he can catch them! Finishing 3rd in an Xtreme One Man Series event is no small feat and weighing 5 fish for 19.14 lbs is a great bag anywhere.

Brent Badzinski wrestled the event's big fish to the stage, an 8.32 lb beauty. The only thing missing from Brent's day was...a fifth keeper! Had he gotten it, he almost certainly would have finished the day with 2 checks instead of one! Good fish Brent!

Nearly 1/2 the field had double digit weights, showing that these guys mean business! There's sure to be some monster weights weighed in at the next event too! The next event story could be all about your day...who knows?

"HOWES IS RICH"
No doubt, the Xtreme OneMan Series is making waves as it moves toward it's 3rd season. Anglers are finding that this format offers something different in the way a tournament day is fished. While it may not be for everyone, Rich Howes know he likes it and can give you 10,000 reasons why you might too if you're not already onboard!

As the 2009 OneMan Series Champion, Rich pocketed "the big check" for $10,000.00, thanks to a strong day one finish with 26.60 lbs. This year's event, held on the Kissimmee Chain out of Camp Mack's River Resort was sure be a shoot out. When such a great facility has in it's midst, 42 of the best anglers the state has to offer, all chasing a $10,000.00 1st place check...you're ecstatic to have a solid lead! Rich held that lead...nearly 3 lbs at the start of day 2 and kept that cushion intact, finishing with 40.28 lbs over a hard charging Gary Niemi. Gary's 2 day total of 37.21 lbs was good for $2,000.00. Rich is all too familiar with Gary's placement in this event, as it's the same position Rich found himself in the 2007 Team Championship. He's a horse when big money is on the line!

Finishing in 3rd, was Russ Osborne with a 2 day catch of 34.23 lbs. Russ had the day one big bass of 8.38 lbs. and started day 2 in the 2nd position. He fell only one spot but had $1720.00 awarded to him for his efforts. Just behind Russ, William Farmer cashed in on his 4th place finish with a cool $1,000.00 for his 33.13 total. Billy Bowen Jr. held the 3rd place spot after day one with a catch of 21.75 lbs, but due to a lack of cooperation on the fish's part on day two, he slid a bit to finish in 8th.

Not to worry! Vance McCullough, of the Angler's Channel was on hand to cover the event. Video footage of Billy's and other's catches will be aired on the Angler's Channel at a later date. Thank you Vance for helping to put this ever growing Series "on the map"!

You know, most would think that a 15 lb daily average would be pretty good in a 2 day event. Well, not here and not these next 2 guys. They know what it takes when you fish against a "who's who" list like the one for this Championship. Tom Morse averaged better than 15 lbs a day. His 2 day total of 30.66 lbs earned him a 5th place finish and $500.00. Ever so close behind Tom, Wayne Yohn, of "Team Camp Mack" fame, tallied 30.42 lbs for the event and was "consoled" with a $400.00 check.

Thaddeus Regan finished just out of the top 10 over the 2 day affair, but did have the fortune of weighing in the day 2 big bass. He was rewarded with a check for $420.00 for his 7.83 lb lunker.

Cumulative effort...that is what the "Angler of the Year" award is all about. While a great many fished most events this year, there is one who stands out each and every year as the Power Pole "Angler of the Year". Six regular season events. Forty-one points separate the 5th place finisher from this year's winner. That winner receives an 8' Power Pole System w/bracket and free entry into next season. With 1119 points, Eric Lewis locked down the AOY title for 2009. He held on over guys like Matt Hinman (1096 pts), Brent Badzinski (1091 pts), Tim Burton (1089 pts) and last year's winner, John Wood, who finished with 1078 points. Thanks to Power Pole for all they do above and beyond awards such as this.

Speaking of John Wood...John, as many of you did, signed up for the Big Bass and the Big Bag of the Year. His 9.62 big bass won him $1040.00 and as if that weren't enough, he captured the Big Bag of the Year too, with a 24.35 lb sack, good for another $800.00. He struck pay dirt twice with that fish and bag. Way to go John!

A quick glance at the results page will allow you to see the field assembled for the final event of the 2009 OneMan Series. Lots of events, both in and out of our state, have been won by many of these competitors. You can see what their total weights were. You can see where everyone placed. But, what you can't see...are some of the series facts and figures...

Did you know...that...

184 different anglers participated throughout the season...

53 different anglers were awarded at least one check...

There were 5 anglers this year earning checks in 3 separate events...and 8 anglers receiving checks in 2 events...

A total of 88% was paid out over the 6 event series, not including product!

As we look toward the 2010 season, we want to express our gratefulness to not only all those 184 anglers mentioned above, but to the sponsors that make Xtreme Fishing Series what it is and look forward to successful years well into the future. It is the support of the anglers that give us the drive to want to be a Tour they can be proud of. Power Pole, Camp Mack's River Resort and The Angler's Channel all deserve a heartfelt thanks for their support in making this year's OneMan Championship a success. The fishermen thank you...and we thank you.

BADzinski’s Shadow Blue Glitter = Green. BADZINSKI’S SHADOW BLUE GLITTER = GREEN.
$5,000.00 worth of green to be exact. All day Saturday we heard how tough it was on the Lake. It only took 11 and 13lbs to win other events that were fishing on Saturday. I think everyone was thinking Harris in March 4 days behind a full moon, it would be a shoot out. But everyone also knows Harris can be stingy when it wants to be and boy was it. John Wood, white jig specialist, led most of the event with 13.87lbs. He waited patiently while the anglers kept bringing their catches to the scale. One 7 to 10lb sack after another, but that 20+ that everyone was anticipating never came. Last but not least was Deep South Rods Pro Staff Member, Brent Badzinski, come to the scales. Everyone watched while he brought his sack to the sink. John was hoping he had a lot of water in the bag, but as he dumped them in we knew it was going to be close. After the scales settled it read 16.55lbs and all you could hear was John Woods’s empty water bottle being crushed in the crowd. Badzinski’s plan had paid off and pocketed him $5,000.00 for his efforts.

Brent was flippin a Producto 6” Tournament Worm Shadow Blue Glitter on his 7' 6" DEEP SOUTH FLIPPIN' STICK. He stuck it out all day and his patience paid off with a 6.94lb kicker which propelled him into 1st place. Rounding out the top 5 Lorida Bait and Tackle owner and Istokpoga director John Wood with 13.87 took home 2nd place honors and $1,100.00, 3rd went to Deep South Rods Pro Staffer Jeff Wetz who netted 13.19lbs and $900.00, 4th place was Chip Smith with 12.42lbs worth $700.00 and in 5th place was David Moore who weighed in 12.28lbs which paid $600.00.

Special thanks to Power Poles’ Robert Shamblin who came out to fish with us. Power Pole is the Presenting Sponsor for the Xtreme One Man Series and is an intricate part of our team. Rich and Penny Reinert from Deep South Rods were hanging around all weekend so conversation was easy to find :). Rich is recovering from open heart surgery and we are just glad to have him back. They are looking to relocate the company to Florida from Wisconsin and soon as Rich’s recovery are a little further along.

The weather was beautiful and the fellowship was irreplaceable. I look forward to seeing everyone at Lake Istokpoga on April 19th for the next XOM event.

Walters WALTERS "WALLOPS" ALMOST 25 LBS
Kyle Walters from Palm Bay brought in 24.75 pounds at the season opener on beautiful Lake Toho. Walters sack was anchored by the big bass of the event which went 8.56lbs. Kyle's total take home from the tournament was $6,270.00, not a bad weekend worth of fishing. The breakdown is as follows, $5,000.00 1st place Guaranteed, $1,020.00 for big bass of the tournament and a $250.00 PAA bonus for being a member. Kyle said after the tournament that his PAA membership basically paid for the event and the remaining $6,020.00 was gravy. Rounding out the top five were Jim Folks in 2nd with 24.25lbs just getting edged out by Kyle, 3rd went to Frank Streeter with 23.38lbs, 4th Tom Rewis with 19.51 and in 5th was Casey Gonzalez bringing in a respectable 18.29lbs.

It was a beautiful day in downtown Kissimmee that brought several new faces and plenty of old friends to the opener. Brian Watts from the Watts Brothers Redfish team came out to chase the little green fish and cashed a check in 13th place. You have probably seen him on ESPN during the Redfish Cup programs. Deep South Rods had a great presence with their pro-staff, which several were first time fisherman with Xtreme. We here at Xtreme Bass Series are very blessed to have such a great group of people to be associated with. When I say people I mean the anglers, sponsors and staff. Everyone is willing to go the Xtra effort to lend a helping hand and it is greatly appreciated. During these tough economic times it was overwhelming to have 102 competitors come out, which is almost double from last years opener, and support the trail. Boat counts are down all over the state and to have the response we had makes all the hard work worth the effort. Thanks again to everyone involved and I look forward to seeing you at Lake Harris next month.

Getting down to business… GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS…
As the much anticipated start to the 2009 Xtreme One Man Series grows near so does the need to go over a few things with the participants to insure a good time is had by all. First off…

Come early… One man tournaments have the potential to be slow at the ramp so come early to avoid long lines. Also, if you see a buddy in line offer to give him/her a hand with their boat or tow vehicle.

Sportsmanship… Remember to be courteous, kind and respectful on the water. It might save you money at the weigh-in.

Weigh-In… As was the case last year the scales will open at 2:30 at each event with flight times beginning at 3:00. To help with the flow, it’s a good idea to load up after you’ve weighed in your catch.

Polygraph… Like last year, we will polygraph the winner at each of the regular season events (and the Championship). Checks and/or other prizes will be handed out immediately following the weigh-in to those not required to take the polygraph. Do not consume alcohol before the awards presentation.

Take Off… Your take off order/boat number is based on when your entry is received. We encourage you to pre-register however; you may pay at the ramp if you wish. Make sure all running lights are functioning properly prior to your number being called. You may be held back if your lights are not functioning properly.

Life Vests… Life Jackets or Vest will be worn by all angler’s any time the outboard motor is in gear and running above IDLE. Kill switch will be connected to boat operator any time the outboard motor is running and in gear.

Please review the rules buy clicking the “One Man Series” button, then click the rules tab. If you have any questions contact Scott Scarboro @ 813-293-3032 or Mike Blocher @ 813-363-5266.

John Wood Whittled out 22.05lbs worth $3000.00. JOHN WOOD WHITTLED OUT 22.05LBS WORTH $3000.00.
John Wood of Sebring Florida fished the middle of Lake Toho throwing a War Eagle spinnerbait along the grass lines and found himself on top of the field at the end of the day. John said he would work hydrilla lines and then when one would bust in the open water, he would throw to it. It was a pattern that must have been working because both of his big fish were caught that way. The wind was howling most of the day buy started to lay down about 2:00. John did most of his damage when the wind was blowing. After the completion of the polygraph, John was so excited about the win he went on to tell us it was his largest purse he had ever won. Most of the time you will find John down on Lake Istokpoga where he runs the Xtreme Bass Series Team Divisional Events or at his tackle shop, Lorida Bait and Tackle. Rounding out the top five were Camp Mack’s J.W. Watkins, with 19.84lbs taking home $1000.00. Third place was Lake Placid’s Gary Niemi with 17.38lbs worth 850.00. Fourth was Ken Lane, who won the first event on Toho that was worth $3500.00, netted himself another 750.00 and finally in fifth was the ever so dangerous Eric Lewis with 15.73 which sent him home with $625.00 in spending money. Big fish for the tournament for the second event in a row was Chris Jerdan, who stuck a 7.47lb which was worth $640.00. The funny thing, it was the only bite Chris had all day but how sweet that bite was. Chris finished in 29th place with only one fish but took home a pocket full of money regardless.

As always thanks to the helping hands that make these events run smoothly and especially to all the anglers. In a time where other trails seem to be diminishing in numbers, gas is at an all time high and the economy is tough you guys still come out and support the series month after month. We couldn’t be happier to be around such a class group of people, it makes it all worth while. We look forward to seeing everyone at Lake Harris on June 29th.

"MORSE" CODE
In only his second event, Tom Morse, had them dialed in on the 4th stop of the Xtreme Bass One Man Series on beautiful Lake Istokpoga. The Wave Worms Tiki-Shadick in Watermelon Red Flake anchored by the Picasso spinnerbait filled the livewell by 9:30 AM with 12.56 lbs which was good enough for his first Xtreme victory. The fish seemed to be in the open water hydrilla where he caught numerous fish throughout the day but couldn’t find anything bigger to better his 12.56 lb bag of fish. Tom was actually the second angler to weigh in so there was a tremendous amount of anxiety waiting for all the other anglers to bring their fish to the scales. When all was done he found himself sitting on top of the leader board and pocketing $3000.00 with just 65 boats competing. After a few fist pumps and hugs from his wife, Tom thanked all of his sponsors for the support with a special thank you for Harlan Griggs from Roland Martin Marina who sponsored him for the event.

Rounding out the top five were newcomer to the trail Geoffrey Balog with 12.37lbs worth $1000.00 for second place, third place went to Chris Jerdan who weighed in
12.22 lbs anchored by big fish for the tournament which filled his pockets with $1500.00, fourth place went to Istokpoga legend Remo Beaver 11.86 lbs. worth $750.00 and finally Corbin Dyer Jr. took $650.00 for his efforts. This was the first One Man Event of the year where the weather was beautiful and the wind was not howling. The point’s race is tight with Xtreme Bass Series Lake Istokpoga Director John Wood currently in the lead with 580 points and breathing down his neck is the big stick of Collin Munns with 579 points. Next stop will be May 25 at Southport Park on Lake Toho, which is Collin’s “home” waters and should make the points race very exciting coming down the final stretch. Thanks again to the entire staff Tim, Gerald, David, Kris, Scott, Jennifer and my beautiful wife Franchesca and to all the anglers that have made this new One Man Series and great success.

I look forward to seeing all of you at Southport Park in May.

Third stop etched in THIRD STOP ETCHED IN "STONE!"
Sunday morning at registration I found myself watching Mel Stone frantically searching for Jerry Driskill, President of Gitem Baits, hoping he had some Junebug Sugars. Luckily for Mel, Jerry had about a dozen on the boat with him and it was just enough to pocket $3200.00 for a day on the water. Mel is the newest member on the Gitem Prostaff and has proven his worth right out of the gate. Mel captured the third stop on Lake Harris out of Hickory Point with a solid limit weighing 20.33 lbs. and had them in the boat by 8:30 in the morning flipping the elusive Junebug Sugar. Second place went to Rich Howes with 19.61lbs that was worth $1200.00 but it was anchored by the big bass of the tournament, an 8.98 lb lunker that netted him an extra $710.00. Third was one of the most consistent anglers on tour, Collin Munns with 17.98lbs that put $1000.00 in his wallet. Rounding out the top five were Tim Fredrick ($700.00) who is always a threat on the Harris Chain, who had 16.30lbs and newcomer to the trail Jeff Fitts ($600.00) who weighed in 15.31lbs.

There was a lot of chatter about the fishing on Saturday but the winds picked up and shut down the fishing for some of the anglers that hoped their patterns would still be effective on Sunday. Unfortunately it didn’t happen for some of the anglers but that is why the call it fishing and not catching. Talking with Milly from Hickory Point, she said they would be extending the ramps in August along with removing the concrete pieces that have been a hazard issue there since the low water conditions. That will be a big improvement.

Special thanks to all the anglers and staff that make Xtreme the largest tournament series in the state. I look forward to seeing you all at Lake Istokpoga next month and good luck to all the anglers that will be back on Harris this weekend for the BFL.

VICTORY VICTORY "LANE"
Ken Lane from Apopka punched in his old coordinates from 2003 into his new GPS and went prefishing on Friday, two days prior to the second stop of the Xtreme Bass One Man Series on Lake Toho. The 2003 hot spot paid off in a big way on Sunday after the last person weighed-in Ken had the largest sack of the day with 21.34lbs. That effort was worth $3500.00 with only 77 boats competing. Ken attributes his success to two techniques: C-rigging a Gitem Warlock and slow dragging a 10 inch Culprit worm on an open water hump. This hump had paid off in the past and sure was the ticket for this event. Power Pole Pro Darrell Davis came in second place with 20.72 lbs anchored with the big fish for the tournament 9.92. That “stuck” $2070.00 into his pocket for a great afternoon of fishing. Rounding out the top 5 were Eric Lewis with 16.68 worth $1000.00 for third place, fourth was Skeeter/Yamaha pro Barry Macchione $750.00 with 16.58, and after lifting the curse was Fred Rigdon with 16.39lbs for 615.00. It was a great time and the anglers were incredible despite other tournaments on the water and 200 FLW Pros prefishing the same time the tournament was going on. A special thanks needs to go out to Joe Clements for opening up his getaway for the polygraph services and the Xtreme crew to hand out and the lending of the Ranger all terrain for our use. It’s people like that, that make this fun and exciting. Thanks again to all the anglers, we will see you on Lake Harris in March.

Stafford’s Formula for Success STAFFORD’S FORMULA FOR SUCCESS

Bob Stafford’s formula for success is very simple. He has been having some transom problems and has to be very careful with his boat, no pre-fishing, show up and fish some old stand by spots and roll the dice. Well he just happened to hit snake eyes. Bob went out and barley bested the field with just over 12 pounds which netted him $2500.00 with just 54 boats competing. Bob told me afterwards that he had two really nice fish come un-buttoned which thought it cost him the tournament, needless to say he was wrong. After he got over his jitters from the state certified polygraph, which is standard at all of the Xtreme One Man Series Events, we handed Bob his check and trophy and sent him home all smiles. Jerrell Mott come in second with 11.98 lbs anchored with a 7.80 worth a cool $1000.00. Third place (800.00) went to Will Evans who had a banner weekend. On Saturday he was crowned Champion at the first Bass Master Weekend Series Tournament out of Camp Mack River Resort which fattened his bank account with $5000.00. Will has been one of the most consistent sticks in Florida over the last few years, keep up the hard work. Fourth place (700.00) was Dan Blanchard with 11.71. Dan has been a steady competitor on the Xtreme Trails over the last couple of years, I feel like all I do is hand him checks. Rounding out the final paying spots were Jim Medlin 600.00, Charlie Houser 500.00, and George Marshall 325.00. Big Bass went to John Supley who only weighed in one fish but it was the right one. John’s 7.93 lber put 540.00 in his pocket.

It was a great day despite the wind and clouds. I had a chance to meet some new people and chat with some Xtreme old timers. Our next event will be on Lake Toho out of Southport on Feb. 24. I look forward to seeing you all there.
